The train slips into darkness once again as laughter rises softly from the glass-dome coach. Evelyn and David Mueller lean toward one another, sharing another kiss as Canyon Spirit glides through yet another tunnel carved into the Colorado mountainside. It has become their tradition aboard the train.

Celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary on Canyon Spirit’s three-day Rockies to Red Rocks route from Denver to Salt Lake City, the couple decided they would kiss in every tunnel the train passed through — all 30 hand-drilled tunnels in the famed Tunnel District, plus the legendary 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel. “We figured if we were going to celebrate 55 years together, we should do it in a way we’d never forget,” Evelyn said with a laugh. For the Muellers, this wasn’t simply a vacation. It was a milestone decades in the making.

Increasingly, travelers are choosing immersive, memory-driven experiences instead of traditional parties, dinners or gifts. Launched in 2026 from the creators of Rocky Mountaineer, Canyon Spirit arrives as travelers rethink not only where they go, but why they travel. Timed alongside America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, the luxury rail experience offers a slower, more meaningful way to explore the American Southwest while celebrating life’s biggest moments.

Outside the Canyon Spirit

Why experiences are replacing traditional celebrations

For many travelers, milestone moments no longer feel suited to a single dinner reservation or gift exchange. Anniversaries, birthdays, retirements and reunions are becoming immersive journeys designed to create lasting memories and deeper connections.

Experiential travel continues to grow as travelers prioritize meaningful moments over material possessions, particularly after years of fast-paced schedules and digital overload. Luxury rail travel, in particular, has seen renewed interest because it naturally encourages travelers to unplug, slow down and be fully present.

That intentional pace is part of what makes Canyon Spirit especially suited for milestone travel. Unlike air travel, where the destination often overshadows the journey itself, rail travel transforms the in-between moments into part of the experience.

There’s no navigating traffic, rushing through airport terminals or staring at highway exits. There’s also no onboard Wi-Fi, encouraging travelers to disconnect from screens and immerse themselves in the scenery and conversations around them. Instead, guests settle into spacious glass-dome coaches as red-rock canyons, winding rivers, mountain passes and sweeping desert landscapes unfold beyond panoramic windows.

A scenic rail journey through the American West

Canyon Spirit doesn’t rush across the landscape. It moves through it slowly enough for travelers to absorb it fully. Outside the train’s panoramic windows, scenery shifts constantly. Rivers run alongside the tracks before alpine forests give way to desert terrain filled with towering sandstone formations and dramatic canyon walls.

  • Scenic highlights along the route include:
  • Red-rock canyons and expansive desert vistas
  • Alpine forests and high mountain passes
  • Sweeping views of the Continental Divide
  • The Tunnel District and historic Moffat Tunnel

Unlike highway travel, many of these landscapes are visible only by rail, offering passengers a rare front-row view of the American West. Train Manager Keith Cooper, who encourages guests to embrace the slower rhythm of the journey. “I want you to really focus on the keyword ‘relax,’” Cooper told passengers. “This is a rare opportunity to unplug from the real world, look out the window and take that deep breath. Relax, unplug and be fully present.”

That philosophy defines the experience. Guests can move freely between train cars, step onto open-air observation decks or settle into spacious seats while onboard hosts bring the landscape to life through storytelling about the region’s history, geology and culture. For many travelers, that combination of scenery, storytelling and uninterrupted time together becomes one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

Canyon Spirit offers two ways to experience the Rockies: the Signature Experience and the upgraded Premier Experience. Both include panoramic glass-dome coaches, regionally inspired cuisine and immersive storytelling, while Premier adds exclusive lounge access, elevated dining, premium beverages and expanded viewing areas for an even more immersive journey.

Romance on the rails

For Evelyn and David Mueller, Canyon Spirit provided the kind of anniversary celebration that felt both nostalgic and entirely new. As the train entered the tunnels, the couple spontaneously decided to kiss in every one. Fellow passengers quickly joined in the celebration. “People started cheering every time we disappeared into another tunnel,” David said. “By the end, the whole train was part of it.”

Passengers talked over glasses of regional wine as golden-hour light spilled across canyon walls. Couples stood together in open-air viewing areas watching rivers cut through desert cliffs below. Soft conversation filled the coach as the train curved through mountain passes that seemed almost unreal. “We’ve taken trips before,” Evelyn said, “but this felt different because we were experiencing everything together instead of rushing through it.”

Dining inspired by place

Dining aboard Canyon Spirit is part of the storytelling experience, with menus inspired by the regions the train travels through. Breakfast might include golden waffles drizzled with Colorado honey or a vegetable frittata topped with tomatillo salsa. Dinner options range from honey-glazed Colorado trout to herb-roasted chicken with citrus rice and chipotle pineapple ribs. Regional wines, craft beers, whiskey tastings and afternoon tea add another sensory layer to the experience.

“Dining aboard the train should feel as connected to the journey as the landscapes outside the window,” said Kaelhub Cudmore, executive chef and director of culinary strategy. “We build menus inspired by the American Southwest using regional ingredients that reflect the places travelers are passing through.” Meals are served directly at guests’ seats, allowing travelers to dine without missing the scenery unfolding outside the windows.
