To go on a vacation is to leave the comfort of the familiar for something different and no one escapes more completely than the solo traveler. Whether you are a seasoned pro or new to the idea of vacationing on your own, one option to consider is an all-inclusive resort. These resorts allow travelers to enjoy dining, drinks and activities without incurring additional charges. Different resorts cater to different demographics and some have greater appeal to solo travelers than others.

AAA Travel Agent Dawn Plate has extensive experience helping travelers plan dream vacations of every kind. Read on as she answers common questions and shares tips to help you decide whether a solo trip to an all-inclusive resort is right for you. “Some people have the misconception that all-inclusive resorts are just for families or couples, but that’s not the case,” Plate says. “I feel very comfortable going to an all-inclusive resort by myself. I’ve traveled solo to family resorts and adult-only ones.”

What makes solo travel different

Solo travelers have many reasons for going it alone. Some want to disconnect and slow down. Others seek adventure. Still others are eager to meet new people. Traveling by oneself gives you the freedom to choose what suits your mood in the moment.

When traveling with others, plans are often decided by group consensus, which can mean compromise. When you travel solo, every decision is yours. You choose where to go, when to eat and what to do and you can change plans at a moment’s notice. “A solo traveler might want to do a guided trip or group activity one day,” Plate says, “but they also might want some chill time. Another option at some all-inclusive resorts is to go to the spa and focus on wellness.”

If an issue arises during your trip, you will need to decide how to handle it on your own. That does not mean you are without support, but it does mean you have the final say.

Staying connected with family and friends is also optional. “That’s something that’s up to the traveler,” Plate says. “I have some people say they want to go off the grid. They want to unplug from the world and don’t even want to use Wi-Fi or get an international phone plan.”

Costs can be a mixed bag. Room rates rarely favor solo travelers, but exceptions do exist. “Solo travelers typically pay double occupancy rates unless there is a solo promotion that waives the fee,” Plate says. “As an agent for AAA Travel, my job is to help find the best value to make your trip go further.”

Why all-inclusive resorts appeal to solo travelers

According to Plate, “Some solo travelers don’t put a priority on the accommodations. They just want to feel safe. Others want to reward themselves with the works.”  All-inclusives are great places to go big with your vacation and, despite their name, these resorts may even have special offerings or upgrades—Plate suggests things like spa access, concierge service or a butler—to make your already-special trip even more memorable.

As private locations, they can offer a level of security that appeals to a solo traveler. With so many choices for on-site meals and activities at all-inclusive resorts, it’s easy to stay on the property for both convenience and better safety.

You can be spontaneous at an all-inclusive resort. As far as dining and activities go, the variety of choices don’t just make it easy to stay on the property; they let you get fully into your vacation and the moment. You’ll have plenty of options when you have an urge to get adventurous with your food selection, for example.

Best all-inclusive resorts for solo travelers

“The choice of where to go really depends on the person and what they want to experience from the trip,” says Plate. “A majority of all-inclusive resorts are concentrated in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, which makes them especially popular thanks to the wide variety of options available. That said, there are exceptional all-inclusive resorts around the world that are also fantastic choices for solo travelers.”

Here are Plate’s suggested places for three different types of travelers:

For the people person

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa — Dominican Republic

“In Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, there’s one resort in particular that’s very lively.  Breathless has a fun, social atmosphere.” Designed for adults who enjoy connecting with others, Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa offers a high-energy, all-inclusive experience that appeals to solo travelers.

  • Adults-only resort with a lively, social atmosphere.

For the outdoorsy type

Pacific Coast resorts — Costa Rica

Costa Rica is great and it’s a good option for solo travelers really into outdoor stuff.” Resorts along the Pacific Ocean provide access to adventure-focused day trips and nature-based experiences. “There’s a lot for a solo traveler to do and I think most would feel comfortable there.”

  • Easy access to zip-lining, rainforest hikes and wildlife tours.
  • Day trips to volcanoes, national parks and thermal baths.
  • Guided excursions well suited to solo travelers.

For the wellness seeker

“There are spas at most all-inclusive resorts, but one that really stands out is called BodyHoliday in St. Lucia.” With a strong emphasis on fitness and holistic wellness, BodyHoliday attracts solo travelers seeking rejuvenation and connection. “They’re into exercise and wellness and fitness and there are a lot of singles there.”

Tips for planning a solo all-inclusive vacation

If you think a solo trip to an all-inclusive resort might be for you, Plate recommends doing the following:

Put safety first. “When I travel solo, it’s important that I feel safe and secure. I want whatever I’m doing to be with a reputable company or resort. If I’m at an all-inclusive resort, I want to have a secure room that has working locks and to be in a central location in the resort rather than someplace remote or isolated—especially at night when I’m walking to or from my room.”

Let the pros help plan your trip. A good travel agent, says Plate, is someone who will “ask questions of the client and see what they’re wanting out of their experience in order to recommend the right destination.” AAA Travel Agents are easy to work with and they have the resources and experience to help you create the kind of vacation you want.

Understand the value of travel insurance. Give yourself peace of mind and protect the financial investment you have in your trip with travel insurance. “It can offer benefits for your vacation if you have to cancel or have interruptions, but also for emergency services, medical evacuation and emergency treatment,” says Plate. And she doesn’t just recommend travel insurance to her clients; she uses it herself. “I take it on every trip that I go on,” she says.
