Explore Aulani
The author, Zachary Laks, takes in the lush tropical grounds from his private balcony at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa.
It starts the moment you arrive.
The first “aloha” from a welcoming porter is followed by the scent of tropical flowers, fresh ocean air and the sound of nearby waves. Moments later, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, unfolds before you with lush gardens, sculpted lava rock formations and sweeping Pacific Ocean views.
Located in Ko Olina on Oʻahu's western coast, Aulani is unlike any other Disney destination. There’s no theme park or cruise ship connection. Instead, the resort blends Disney’s signature hospitality with authentic Hawaiian culture, oceanfront luxury and island-inspired experiences.
I discovered that firsthand while celebrating my ninth wedding anniversary at Aulani. Before arriving, I wondered whether a Disney resort would feel like the right fit for a romantic getaway. What I found was a destination that balances family-friendly energy with ample opportunities for couples to relax, reconnect and slow down.
From peaceful mornings by the water to sunset dinners and spa treatments inspired by Hawaii itself, Aulani offers a side many travelers may not expect.
Aulani’s grand reception area draws inspiration from the graceful form and cultural significance of the traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe.
One of the biggest reasons Aulani works so well for adults is its location. Set within the resort community of Ko Olina, it feels removed from the bustle of Waikīkī while remaining close to many of Oʻahu’s top attractions.
Known for its protected lagoons, calm waters and spectacular sunsets, Ko Olina invites couples to spend their days walking the shoreline, relaxing by the ocean or exploring nearby attractions., Diamond Head, and the North Shore are all within reach, making Aulani an ideal home base for island adventures.
Beyond the resort, Oʻahu offers endless opportunities to explore, from Pearl Harbor and Honolulu to the North Shore’s beaches and scenic drives. Planning how you’ll get around — whether that means renting a car, arranging airport transportation or adding another Hawaiian island to your itinerary — can help you make the most of your vacation. A AAA Travel Agent can help coordinate the details, from choosing the right room category and deciding how long to stay to determining whether splitting time between islands makes sense for your trip, creating a seamless Hawaii getaway that balances relaxation with exploration.

Look closely as you wander Aulani’s tropical gardens and winding pathways — playful Menehune statues are hidden in the details.
What truly distinguishes Aulani is the way Hawaiian culture is woven throughout the resort. The open-air lobby is inspired by the shape of a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe, while native plants, tropical gardens and cultural artwork create an environment that feels deeply connected to the islands.
One of Hawaii’s largest collections of contemporary Hawaiian art can be found throughout the property, alongside sculptures and artifacts that celebrate local traditions and storytelling. Guests can further immerse themselves through activities such as lei making, music demonstrations and cultural presentations.
Adding an element of discovery, more than 300 hidden Menehune — the legendary Hawaiian “little people” believed to be guardians of the islands — are tucked throughout the resort grounds. While Disney magic appears in thoughtful ways, Hawaii remains at the center of the experience.
Oceanfront views and island-inspired dining at Aulani’s AMA'AMA restaurant.
While Aulani is celebrated as a family-friendly resort, it also offers couples countless opportunities to relax, reconnect and enjoy Hawaii's beauty at a slower pace.
Dining is one of the highlights of any stay. For a memorable evening, reserve a table at AMAʻAMA, the resort’s signature beachfront restaurant, where Pacific views and locally inspired cuisine create a romantic setting.
For cocktails and small plates, The ʻŌlelo Room offers an intimate atmosphere inspired by Hawaiian language and culture. Couples can also experience KA WAʻA Lūʻau, an evening of Hawaiian music, dance and storytelling.
During our visit, we met Dawn and John, who had returned to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. “Disney just always does it right,” Dawn said. “They make you feel welcome no matter what you’re celebrating.”
For couples seeking relaxation, Laniwai Spa is one of Aulani’s standout experiences. The 15,000-square-foot facility offers treatments inspired by Hawaiian healing traditions, hydrotherapy gardens and couples massages. A traditional lomi lomi massage provides a meaningful connection to Hawaii’s wellness heritage, while tranquil outdoor relaxation areas encourage guests to embrace the slower pace of island life.
Sunset views from the 18+ infinity-edge whirlpools at ‘Alohi Point offer a peaceful escape at Aulani.
Many of Aulani’s best experiences take place outdoors. Lounge along the beach, float through Waikolohe Stream or unwind in the infinity-edge whirlpools at ʻAlohi Point. For a quieter atmosphere, Wailana Pool offers an adults-only retreat, while Rainbow Reef provides the chance to snorkel among hundreds of tropical fish. Beyond the resort's water attractions, couples can enjoy Hawaiian cultural activities, explore nearby hiking trails, play championship golf or visit historical and cultural landmarks across Oʻahu.
After nearly a week celebrating my anniversary at Aulani, I left with one clear takeaway: this family-friendly resort is also an exceptional destination for adults. Even though there is the chance of character encounters and other family activities lies a sophisticated Hawaiian retreat filled with excellent dining, cultural experiences, luxurious accommodations and peaceful spaces designed for relaxation.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, planning a honeymoon or simply seeking a unforgettable Hawaiian getaway, the resort reveals a side many travelers may not expect. I never imagined a family-focused resort could deliver such a memorable anniversary experience. I returned home with one certainty: I’ll be back.
