Roadside Assistance Frequently Asked Questions

Prev Next

When your vehicle is disabled, AAA Roadside Assistance has you covered wherever you're driving or riding. This page explains how to request help, what your plan includes for towing, battery, fuel, and lockout service, and how to check your remaining service calls.

How do I get reimbursed for towing or vehicle lockout services?

If you obtain non-AAA roadside assistance without first requesting service from AAA, your reimbursement will be up to the contract rate paid to AAA service providers for similar services.

To obtain reimbursement, follow these steps:

On the AAA.com website, click on Contact Us at the bottom left corner of any page. You can also call to request a copy of the form at 800.222.1134 or pick up a copy at a nearby branch. To find a branch near you, click here. Complete the form and mail it with the original paid receipt to AAA. Receipt must be fully paid in the member’s name receiving service. Requests for reimbursement must be submitted to AAA within 60 days of the date the service was provided.

What is the limit for roadside assistance calls under my AAA membership?

In fairness to all members, roadside assistance is not to be used as a substitute for proper vehicle maintenance. To help control membership dues, AAA has a call limit on roadside assistance usage. After the last call, the member may continue to call AAA for service, but must be prepared to pay the service provider for services rendered. These service limits enable AAA to continue providing reliable, high-quality, cost-effective roadside assistance. Consult the member handbook for more details regarding your allotment. Please note that Primary and Associate Members within the same household have different membership numbers and each is eligible for roadside assistance calls. The membership number used when requesting services will be the account charged with the service call. Multiple service calls for the same problem will be counted separately on your service record. Consult the member handbook for more details. There may be instances when the road service date is different than the membership renewal date on your membership card. When there may have been a lapse in membership, the membership renewal date may change and road service date may not. This may impact the total number of roadside assistance calls within a specific timeframe.

How do I arrange for roadside assistance if my car is disabled?

If you need roadside assistance, no matter your location, you can request it via the AAA Mobile App, online through AAA.com/RoadsideAssistance or you can call the number supplied on your AAA Membership Card. When the service provider arrives, they will request to see your AAA Card and your photo ID. (Your digital membership cards are available in digital wallet). If you don’t have your card with you, call us anyway and we will verify that you are a member. NOTE: If you have the AAA Mobile App, you will be able to show your electronic membership cards by going into the app and click on the “View cards" under your membership number. You will be asked to log in to the AAA Mobile App, if you haven’t already done so at one time. Keep in mind that your AAA Membership covers you, not the vehicle. Roadside assistance will be provided on any eligible vehicle that you are driving or riding in at the time of disablement when you present your personal valid membership card. For example, if you are stranded with a friend in their vehicle and you call for service, we would help as long as you are present at the time of service. If you have the added benefit of PlusRV or PremierRV and the recreational vehicle you are riding in becomes disabled, you would be covered even though the RV is not yours, as long as you are present at the time of service.

How far your vehicle can be towed will depend on which AAA Membership plan you have:

AAA Classic - 5-mile tows

AAA Plus - 100-mile tows

AAA Premier - One (1) 200-mile tow per household; remaining tows up to 100-miles each For a complete explanation of benefits, consult the membership handbook.

What do I do if I am traveling outside my home area and need roadside assistance?

As long as you are an active AAA member, it will not matter what part of the United States and Canada that you have a breakdown, as you will be covered. When you need to request roadside assistance, just call 800.AAA.HELP (222.4357). Your call will be routed to the AAA club responsible for providing service in the area where you are located at the time of the breakdown.

How many miles of free towing do I receive with my membership?

AAA will travel any distance to get to a stranded member. Your vehicle will be towed to either the service provider’s repair shop or up to the following number of miles without charge in any direction from the place of disablement to a destination of your choice. Of course, any repairs or additional towing for the same breakdown will be at your own expense.

The following provides the towing miles for each available membership level:

AAA Classic: You receive tows up to 5 miles each. AAA Plus: You receive tows up to 100 miles each. AAA Premier: You receive up to one tow up to 200 miles; remaining tows up to 100 miles each. Memberships available for other types of vehicles – see the Member Handbook for details. NOTE: If you need towing beyond the limit of your membership level stated above, you will be charged for the extra miles at the service provider’s prevailing private rate. For more details visit aaa.com/memberhandbook.

Can I get fuel delivery in my area?

As long as you have an AAA membership, fuel delivery is a part of the membership benefits. If your vehicle runs out of fuel, a limited supply will be delivered, if available, to enable you to reach the nearest service station. Classic members will be charged the current pump price for fuel. Plus and Premier members will receive a sufficient amount of fuel to reach the nearest open service station at no cost. If you require diesel fuel, please request it when you call for service, as it may not always be available. In some cases, your vehicle may have to be towed if it runs out of fuel. If fuel delivery is not available, towing will be provided under the towing benefit. For complete description including terms, conditions and exclusions, consult the online membership handbook here.

I would like to get reimbursed for a failed AAA Battery. What do I need to do?

If your AAA-branded battery fails due to a defect, an authorized AAA Battery Service provider should be contacted for replacement. If you have replaced your AAA-branded battery without contacting an authorized AAA Battery Service provider and are seeking reimbursement consideration, please fill out the AAA Battery Limited Warranty Reimbursement Form. You can access this form by clicking on Roadside Assistance from the drop down menu under Automotive and click on AAA Battery Limited Warranty Reimbursement Form under Additional Information toward the bottom. To go directly to the AAA Battery Limited Warranty Reimbursement Form, click here.

If I have used up my allotted service calls before my membership year is over, how do I obtain more service calls?

To help control membership dues, AAA has an annual limit on roadside assistance usage per member. Consult the member handbook for more details regarding your allotment. If you have exceeded those service calls prior to the end of your membership year, you can still receive roadside service. However, you will be charged special, pre-negotiated AAA rates that are lower than you would pay if you weren’t an AAA Member. Payments by cash or your personal check are acceptable, and your special AAA rate will apply.

How do I determine the date of the AAA battery on a car I purchased?

On the AAA battery there should be a sticker with a single letter and a single number. The letter represents the month that the battery was manufactured and the number represents the year. See below.

B=Feb
