What do I need to prepare my taxes?

Before filing, gather these essential documents to avoid delays:

  • W-2 and 1099 forms for 2024
  • Last year’s state tax statements
  • Social Security numbers for yourself and your dependents
  • Bank account and routing numbers
  • Documentation for deductible expenses, such as moving costs, childcare, student loan interest, charitable donations, and more.

Can I deduct utilities from my taxes?

In some cases, yes! According to TaxAct®, if you’re self-employed and use part of your home as a workspace, you may deduct a portion of your utility expenses.

Landlords who cover utilities for their tenants can also claim those expenses as deductions. Additionally, if you’ve installed renewable energy updates, like solar panels, you could qualify for energy-related tax credits in 2024.
