EXPERIENCE
Before he was writing travel stories for AAA Connect, Michael Campo was telling stories on film. He got his start as one of the subjects of The Human Experience (2008), a documentary that followed a small group of friends into some of the harder corners of the human condition - work that went on to win the Audience Choice Award at the American Cinematic Experience Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Atlanta International Documentary Film Festival.
In 2012 he served as writer, producer and editor on Child 31, a documentary short made for Mary's Meals that told the story of CNN Hero Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow and his mission to feed children in the developing world.
A few years later he wrote A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story, directed by Sara Hirsh Bordo, which followed Lizzie Velasquez's journey from viral bullying target to anti-bullying advocate testifying before Congress - and won the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at SXSW 2015.
Michael went on to found and direct the iChoose series, a film project built around the idea that the small choices we make define who we become, profiled by SCENES. Writing under the pen name Michael Salvatore, he's also the author of The Master Protocol, a psychological conspiracy thriller. Before joining AAA, he spent time working with inner-city youth in New York City - an experience that sharpened the same instinct for other people's stories that now shapes his writing.
Today, as a Digital Content Production Specialist for AAA - The Auto Club Group, Michael brings that filmmaker's eye to the road, writing about the people and places that make travel meaningful - including a return trip to Panama for the Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel Summit, chronicled in Picture Perfect Panama.
