Fort Union Trading Post Rendezvous — Williston

At Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site near Williston in the far northwestern corner of the state, this annual living history event brings the fur trade era of the early 19th century back to life. Traders, craftspeople, and Native American interpreters set up an encampment on the grounds of the reconstructed fort, demonstrating period skills including blacksmithing, flint knapping, brain tanning, and bow making. The site sits near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, where the original fort served as the most important trading post on the Upper Missouri from 1828 until 1867.

The park's landmark structures, including a full-scale replica of a 13th-century Norwegian Gol Stave Church, a working Danish windmill, a 30-foot Swedish Dala Horse, and an operational Finnish sauna, serve as the backdrop for three days of live music, traditional food, craft vendors, cultural demonstrations, workshops, kids' activities, and the lighting of a communal bonfire on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
