1. How can AAA help protect my trip?

For more than 30 years, AAA has teamed with award-winning insurer Allianz Global Assistance to offer AAA Members valuable travel insurance with special AAA benefits. Allianz Global Assistance holds an A+ rating from AM Best and has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 1991.

They’ve won multiple best-of awards from publications including Global Traveler, The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News & World Report, to name a few. Allianz has a presence in 78 countries, can communicate in 70 languages and has a network of nearly 899,170 medical providers ready to give you the best care, anywhere your journey takes you.

2. Why should I buy travel insurance?

You’ve invested your time, energy, and resources into your trip—so it’s only smart to protect that investment. Travel insurance provides peace of mind before and during your journey, with benefits for unexpected disruptions that could otherwise derail your plans.

Here’s what you can expect from travel insurance coverage, especially when secured through AAA’s partner, Allianz:

  • Reimbursement for travel disruptions such as trip cancellations, delays, or interruptions.
  • Benefits for emergency medical transportation and other critical health-related incidents while abroad.
  • 24/7 global assistance with access to a live support team ready to help virtually anywhere in the world.
    • On-the-go support services including:
    • Passport replacement
    • Pharmacy location assistance
    • Legal referrals
    • Hospital admission support, including payment guarantees in some cases
  • Destination entry compliance—certain countries may require proof of travel insurance upon arrival.
  • Easy access to documentation—travelers covered by Allianz can request an Embassy Letter online, a summary document outlining your coverage to present when needed.
  • Exclusive AAA benefit: Can provide reimbursements for vaccination costs required for destination entry if you cancel your trip for a covered reason.

With travel insurance, you're not just purchasing a policy—you're gaining a safety net that travels with you.

3. What does travel insurance cover?

Whether you’re taking an overseas trip or traveling across the United States, you can choose a travel insurance plan that offers benefits for a wide range of travel emergencies and mishaps, including:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption for all kinds of travel, including cruises, tours, rail vacations and road trips
  • Illness or injury while traveling , including emergency medical and dental treatments not covered by your insurance policy
  • Lost, delayed or stolen baggage or travel documents
  • Can provide benefits for collision damage or theft of your rental car with Allianz Rental Car Protector
  • Job loss if you or a traveling companion are laid off or terminated
  • and more

4. Does travel insurance cover rental cars?

Travel insurance isn't just for big-ticket international trips—it can also provide valuable protection for smaller getaways, including domestic weekend escapes.

Allianz Global Assistance offers rental car benefits through its Rental Car Damage Protector with no deductible for collision damage or theft of your rental car.

It also includes added benefits like trip interruption coverage for nonrefundable expenses and baggage protection if your luggage is stolen from a locked rental vehicle. It can offer peace of mind, wherever your journey takes you.

5. Is there support for non-emergency medical issues?

Yes. Before traveling internationally, you'll receive an email with instructions to register for Allianz Global Doctor Visits*, if available in one or more of your destinations.

This service gives you convenient access to mobile scheduling for both virtual and in-person doctor visits while abroad and helps you quickly address unexpected, non-emergency medical concerns—such as a stomach bug, migraine or minor injury—so you can get the care you need and continue enjoying your trip with peace of mind.

6. What if I change my mind?

Trip insurance takes the worry out of travel, offering peace of mind before and during your journey. Allianz Travel Insurance through AAA adds even more flexibility with a 15-day review period.

From the date of purchase, you can cancel your plan and receive a full refund—provided you haven’t started your trip or filed a claim. It's an easy way to protect your travel investment while keeping your options open

8. Are cruises covered?

Cruises come with their own set of unpredictable challenges, making travel insurance especially important. Cruise insurance through Allianz is specially designed to address the unique needs of cruise travelers.

For instance, if your cruise skips or substitutes a scheduled port of call from your original itinerary, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for each missed port—no receipts needed.

And if your trip is canceled or interrupted due to severe weather, such as a hurricane, or if a river cruise is affected by high or low water levels, your benefits may apply. With this added protection, you can sail with greater peace of mind, knowing your investment is safeguarded in case of the unexpected.

9. Are family members covered?

With select travel insurance plans through Allianz, children 17 and under are covered at no additional cost when traveling with a parent or grandparent. It’s a smart way to protect the whole family—without stretching your budget.

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a dream vacation, having coverage for the unexpected helps you travel with confidence.

10. Is travel insurance worth it?

Absolutely. When you’ve planned and saved for the perfect getaway, the last thing you want is for unexpected mishaps—like flight delays, medical emergencies or lost luggage—to ruin it.

Add travel insurance, even if you’ve already booked, and protect your vacation investment before you go.

Whether you’re setting sail on a cruise, heading overseas or road-tripping across the country, a travel insurance plan from AAA’s trusted partner, Allianz Global Assistance, provides protection tailored to your journey. With 24/7 assistance, medical support, benefits for trip cancellations and interruptions and even rental car protection, it’s more than just a backup—it’s peace of mind that travels with you.
