First you hear the sound, then you see the damage.

Gravel, rocks and various forms of debris can come flying toward your car when you least expect it and leave quite the mark on your windshield. Whether the chip is small with a slow-forming crack or large and more impairing, windshield repair is a popular and generally available option.

When complete windshield replacement is needed, there are services for this, too. The question is, how do you know if you need windshield repair or windshield replacement? And what should you do if a stranger offers to fix your cracked windshield at no charge?

Here, we’ll answer all your important windshield repair and replacement questions. And since windshields with cracks are the most frequent auto insurance claim in the United States, we’ll help you know how to avoid being targeted by an insurance defrauder. Armed with the correct information, you can quickly restore your glass to its former glory and regain some peace of mind along the way.

Windshield 101: Replacement or repair services?

Windshield chips of all sizes need to be repaired. If ignored, even a tiny chip or crack can grow or take on water, potentially fogging the windshield and obstructing your vision. When you factor in the extreme weather and rapid temperature changes that many people experience today, even minor cracks can worsen quickly. It’s best to act when you notice that first chip or crack to avoid needing windshield replacement at a much higher cost.

Side-by-side comparison of windshield crack; fix or replace

Repair or replace? Quick tests to decide:

  • Windshield repair - Windshield repair is generally a good option if a chip’s diameter is an inch or less (roughly the width of a quarter) or if a dollar bill can fully cover a crack. Whether you have your windshield repaired at an auto glass facility, use a mobile repair service, or purchase a DIY kit, a resin injection is the general repair technique; it works like a caulk to fill the damage, restore strength to the glass and prevent further crack progression.
  • Windshield replacement - If the crack on your windshield is larger than a dollar bill or if it’s close to the edge of the windshield, the structural integrity of the glass may be compromised, and you’ll likely need to have your windshield replaced by a professional. One instance where a small chip or crack may require an entire windshield replacement is if the damage is directly in your line of sight. While the resin used in windshield repair fortifies the strength of your glass, it still leaves a visible mark. A glass technician can advise on whether complete windshield replacement is necessary.

Filing your insurance claim for auto glass replacement or repair

After assessing the initial windshield damage, one of the first steps to take is to contact your insurance company. An agent will work with you to determine if the damage is covered under your policy, explain whether you owe a deductible based on your level of coverage and then coordinate the windshield repair or replacement. They may give you the option to choose your auto glass repair shop or direct you to a provider within their network of preferred shops.

Mobile windshield repair vs. auto glass repair shop

Mobile windshield repair has become the default option for many people because of its time- and money-saving advantages. In most cases, mobile windshield repair comes directly to your home or place of business and takes just under an hour from start to finish. But the precision and expertise of brick-and-mortar repair shops can be hard to top if you drive a specialized vehicle, live in an area of extreme weather, or are limited by space that would make it hard for a mobile technician to do their job. Consider, too, that the controlled environment of a shop allows adhesives to cure without interference from weather and that shops typically have access to a wider variety of parts.

Can mobile windshield replacement perform ADAS calibration?

An increasing number of vehicles now have windshield-embedded cameras and sensors. This adds a layer of complexity to the windshield replacement process you’ll want to inquire about before selecting a provider. Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) calibration is often required after windshield replacement for cars with these newer windshield technologies. And while many mobile service providers have the specialized equipment to perform this calibration, others may not. It’s crucial to check that the mobile repair service (or shop) you hire has accurate and reliable ADAS calibration equipment and that their technicians are properly trained and certified in this type of repair if your vehicle is equipped with ADAS technology.

How to avoid windshield repair fraud?

Even in cases where you’re not shopping for windshield repair, you may get approached by a stranger asking if you have a chipped windshield. One of the first signs of a scam is that they will offer free windshield repair or random incentives. Their goal is to get reimbursement from your insurance company, not perform quality windshield repair. Many running fraudulent operations may even file a claim stating they completed a windshield installation when they only made repairs.  And once they have your personal information to file a claim, there’s a good chance they’ll attempt to file more fraudulent claims against your policy without your knowledge.  Always verify that any auto glass repair shop or mobile repair service has proper accreditation and be sure to begin any repair with a call to your insurance company first.

New advancements in vehicle windshields

On the horizon for new cars or vehicle windshield replacements, it is good to have some basic knowledge of recent advancements in car windshield technology and the materials transforming the automotive industry – focusing on enhancing safety, durability, functionality and aesthetics. Here are some notable innovations:

Technological advancements

  • Holographic displays: Hyundai Mobis has introduced the world's first full-windshield holographic display, which projects driving information directly onto the windshield without physical screens. This technology is set to launch by 2027 and aims to redefine in-car display systems.
  • Smart glass: Electrochromic smart glass allows drivers to control sunlight exposure and glare by adjusting tint levels. It also integrates with vehicle systems for real-time control.
  • Heads-up displays (HUDs): Advanced HUDs project critical driving information, such as speed and navigation, directly onto the windshield, reducing distractions.

Material innovations

  • Gorilla glass: Known for its durability and lightweight properties, Gorilla Glass offers improved impact resistance and, due to its reduced weight, contributes to fuel efficiency.
  • Hydrophobic coatings: These coatings repel water, dirt and oils, improving visibility during wet conditions while reducing maintenance needs.
  • Graphene-based glass: Graphene's high strength and conductivity make it a promising material for lightweight, durable windshields capable of supporting interactive features.

Functional enhancements

  • Heated windshields: Thin heating elements embedded within the glass quickly defrost ice or fog, ideal for cold climates.
  • Wiper-free windshields: Ultrasonic systems are being developed to repel rain and debris without wipers, minimizing potential damage to the glass.
  • Anti-reflective and UV coatings: These treatments reduce glare and protect passengers from harmful ultraviolet rays while maintaining optical clarity.

These cutting-edge features demonstrate how windshields are becoming smarter, safe and more durable—offering drivers protection and an enhanced driving experience.

More than just glass: keeping safety first
