Choose from passports & passport cards

U.S. passports are managed by the U.S. Department of State and are required for both departure from and re-entry into the United States. Every citizen, including babies, must have a valid passport for international travel. Options include a passport or a passport card. A passport card is a wallet-sized, plastic passport that does not contain visa pages.

  • Standard Passport
All persons are required to present a standard passport if traveling by air outside the U.S. Your passport will be needed for the majority of land and sea travel destinations as well.
  • Passport Card
These are valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda (they are not valid for international air travel).

passport process

Passport application or renewal steps

Determine your eligibility & timing

  • Check if you’re applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one. Adult standard passports are typically valid for 10 years and minors under 16 are valid for five years
  • For renewals, ensure that your previous passport was issued when you were at least 16 years old, was issued within the last 15 years and is in your current name (or provide documentation)
  • Start early! Routine processing may take 4-6 weeks, or sometimes longer, depending on the time of year or specific situation

Gather required documents & submit application

  • For a new passport application, you'll need to provide evidence of U.S. citizenship, a completed application form, a passport photo that meets government specifications and the appropriate fees
  • You will need to visit an authorized passport acceptance facility in person to submit your passport application, documents and fees. Please check with the facility to determine if an appointment is required (for example, you're within 14 days of travel)
  • For a child under age 16, you'll need to apply again in person (you cannot renew the passport)

Gather required documents & request renewal

  • For a passport renewal, you'll need to submit your most recent U.S. passport, proof of any name change, a completed form, a new passport photo that meets government specifications and the appropriate fees
  • If eligible, you can utilize the online renewal process or renew by mail
  • If you are not eligible for renewal (for example, your passport expired more than five years ago, was lost/stolen, or you have a name change but no documentation), you’ll need to submit a new application

International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit, often referred to as an International Driver’s License, is valid in 150 countries worldwide. It serves as both a driver’s license and ID, containing your name, photo and driver information in 10 languages. An IDP is available through select AAA offices.

AAA is authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP. An IDP is recommended for international travelers, even if you are not planning to drive. Some countries require an IDP. IDPs may only be issued a maximum of six (6) months in advance of the desired effective date.

How to Apply for an IDP

To obtain an International Driving Permit, you will need to provide:

  • Download and fill out an application, and bring it to a AAA branch office that offers IDP service. (Please check in advance to ensure IDP services are offered.)
  • Two original passport pictures (Many AAA branch offices offer photo services. Please check in advance.)
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Pay a $20 USD permit fee

If you are not able to visit a AAA branch office with IDP services, your IDP can be obtained through the mail. Simply mail the following to the AAA office nearest you offering IDPs (check locally for availability and payment options):

  • Your completed IDP application
  • Two original passport pictures each signed on the back
  • $20 USD permit fee
  • A photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license
  • If desired, include additional U.S. funds for expedited return mail service. See USPS.com, Fedex.com or UPS.com for rates.

*Savings applicable for RushMyPassport service fees only. Government fees and shipping not included.
