***Geographical Areas Which Honor Inter-American Driving Permits (Convention on Regulation of Inter-American Motor Vehicle Traffic, Organization of American States, Washington, D.C. 1943)  as of January 2009. If you intend to drive in the following countries, be sure to check INTER-AMERICAN DRIVING PERMIT box page 1. In Brazil, you will need an Inter-American Driving Permit if you intend to stay for over 180 days.

If you apply for your IDP at a AAA branch, it can be processed there and you can walk out with your permit the same day.

If you apply online, you'll receive a link to see when it is processed and a tracking number when it is mailed.

IDPs are valid for 1 year from the effective date or the expiration of your driver’s license, whichever comes first. International Driving Permits are not renewable.

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an International Driving Permit.

IDPs are serialized documents and cannot be duplicated or renewed.  If lost, stolen, or expired, you must apply for and purchase a new IDP.

The IDP is recognized in over 150 countries worldwide. The IADP serves as a translation of your driver's license for select North, Central, and South American countries. Check your destination's entry requirements to determine which one you need.
